Physicians who train in Sports Medicine often find themselves, like outreach physicians, on or in the field as the first point of care. Those physicians who choose to cover or participate in events such as surfing and outreach clinics find themselves requiring skills in Primary Care, Sports and Wilderness Medicine. The most rewarding aspects of my studies and career have manifested as a non-profit organization, “Waves of Health”, that strives to combine principles of Sports Medicine, Wilderness Medicine, surfing and primary care outreach medicine to benefit the often underserved and communities visited by surfers and other watermen. “Waves of Health” is not only committed to improving the lives of host peoples in the places we travel to surf, but also to surfers themselves.
Having been involved with the Surfers Medical Association, the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), the Wilderness Medical Society (WMS) for years now, I have come to know the players who have laid the groundwork of surfing medicine and its close ties to outreach clinics in areas such as Sumba and the Mentawai’s in Indonesia as well as the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Nicaragua, Fiji and anywhere there are underserved people and waves. Whether through faith or a deep need to validate the reward of surfing exotic waves, a good percentage of surfing health professionals engage in outreach work. Their work involves using the principles of primary care and sometimes wilderness medicine to treat and prevent disease without modern hospital diagnostics. Their play and psychic reward for that work, surfing, requires skills in both Sports and Wilderness Medicine to treat and prevent injury.
Sports and Wilderness Medicine share many commonalities with Waves of Health and each other. Like Waves of Health, WMS and ACSM have been designated as 501©3 public charities for the public good. Modules of education presented in the outreach clinics and at Waves of Health CME conferences will improve the first-response capabilities for those who travel away from urban medical centers in search of uncrowded waves and peace. The roles of surfing as both a sport and driving factor for traveling health and environmental stewardship both locally and in far flung regions throughout the globe involve aspects of both sports and wilderness medicine. Ocean Sports Medicine, Wilderness Medicine and Outreach Medicine will never be mutually exclusive from each other in my opinion as the cultures and lifestyles themselves overlap. Therefore the idea of surfing sports and outreach medicine must occupy all these spheres. It is the mission of Waves of Health to fulfill this requirement.
Aloha to you,
Clayton Everline MD, FACP, FAWM, CSCS
